Summit Therapeutics (SMMT) said on Nov. 4 that its adjusted loss for the third quarter ended Sept. 30 was 20 cents a share, a smaller loss than the 29 cents consensus estimate.

Summit is a biopharmaceutical oncology company focused on ivonescimab, a bispecific antibody it in-licensed from Akeso Inc. in January 2023. The company was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in Miami, Florida.

A regulatory filing showed a GAAP net loss of $208.4 million, or 26 cents per basic and diluted share, compared with $231.8 million, or 31 cents, a year earlier.

Here's how the company did:

  • Adjusted loss per share: 20 cents, vs. 13 cents a year earlier and the 29 cents consensus estimate
  • GAAP net loss per share: 26 cents, vs. 31 cents a year earlier
  • GAAP net loss: $208.4 million, vs. $231.8 million a year earlier

The adjusted figure excludes stock-based compensation, which the company describes as a non-cash charge.

Spending and cash

Non-GAAP operating expenses were $166.9 million, up from $103.4 million a year earlier. The company said the increase was driven by the expansion of clinical studies and development costs related to ivonescimab.

Non-GAAP research and development expenses were $145.2 million, compared with $90.5 million a year earlier. Non-GAAP general and administrative expenses were $21.7 million, compared with $12.9 million, which the company attributed to expanded infrastructure and headcount.

Cash and short-term investments totaled $629.8 million at Sept. 30, down from $713.4 million at Dec. 31, 2025. During the quarter, the company raised $94.1 million in gross proceeds through its at-the-market facility.

AstraZeneca completed a $2.0 billion strategic equity investment in Summit on Oct. 5, after the quarter closed. The company said the investment will support continued acceleration of ivonescimab development.

Ivonescimab milestones

The FDA set a PDUFA goal action date of Nov. 14, 2026, for the pending Biologics License Application for ivonescimab with chemotherapy in EGFR-mutated, locally advanced or metastatic non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer. The company said it will host a conference call and webcast after the FDA acts.

For the HARMONi-3 trial, the company expects the number of progression-free survival events needed in the squamous cohort to be reached in the fourth quarter of 2026. Enrollment in the HARMONi-GI3 colorectal study is expected to complete in the third quarter of 2027.

Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer Robert W. Duggan said the quarter "marked a period of meaningful momentum for Summit," highlighted by the AstraZeneca investment and the expansion of the company's clinical collaborations.

Stockholders approve more authorized shares

At a special meeting on Nov. 4, stockholders approved an amendment to the company's Restated Certificate of Incorporation that raises the number of authorized common shares by 1,000,000,000, from 1,000,000,000 to 2,000,000,000. The company said it filed the amendment with the Delaware Secretary of State the same day, and it took effect on filing.

The proposal received 658,142,561 votes for, 1,983,511 against and 3,134,826 abstentions, according to a regulatory filing. The board had recommended approval.
